Hang Christmas lights on eavestroughs with plastic clips that hook over the gutter's front lip, never with nails, staples or screws. Clean the gutters first, keep cords out of the downspout openings, and use certified outdoor lights on a GFCI outlet. On gutter guards, use clips that grip the outer edge without lifting the guard.
Should you clean the gutters before hanging lights?
Yes, and the calendar makes it easy. Across the GTA the main leaf drop runs from mid-October into November, and most people put their lights up in late November or early December. If the gutters are still full when the clips go on, those leaves sit in the trough all winter. Wet leaves hold water, spill it over the edge in every thaw and freeze into ice right where the bulbs are hanging. When to clean your eavestroughs covers the fall timing street by street.
There is a safety reason too. Every climb in cold, wet weather is a risk, and WorkSafeBC warns that falls from ladders are a common source of injury at this time of year, naming both hanging lights and cleaning gutters. Get the gutter cleaning done first, or have it done, and the lights become the only December climb.
Which clips work on eavestroughs?
Most GTA homes have aluminum K-style eavestroughs, with a rolled lip along the top of the front face. Gutter clips hook over that lip and hold a bulb or a short length of cord. They cost little, go on in seconds and come off without a mark. Here is how the common options compare on a typical eavestrough:
| Fastener | Works on an aluminum eavestrough? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic gutter clips | Yes, the best choice | Hook over the front lip; nothing to drill, nothing left behind |
| All-in-one clips | Yes | Fit the lip and hold C7 or C9 bulbs upright or sideways for a neat line |
| Soffit clips | Yes, under the eave | Attach to the soffit instead of the gutter; useful with full-cover guards |
| Magnetic clips | No | Aluminum is not magnetic, so they slide off |
| Nails, staples, screws | Never | ESA warns they damage cords, and every hole in the trough or fascia is a future leak |
Can you hang Christmas lights on gutter guards?
Yes, as long as the guard stays exactly where it is. A gutter guard only works when it sits flat and stays fastened the way it was installed. Lifting the edge of a micro-mesh panel to slide a clip underneath, or hanging weight off the mesh, opens a gap that leaves will find and can bend the fastening that holds the guard down.
Alu-Rex, a guard maker, suggests clips that wrap around the gutter's front edge, so the lights hang without touching the guard at all, or soffit clips that attach under the eave and stay clear of the guard and its fasteners. The edge clip gives the neatest line of bulbs. The soffit clip is the fallback when a guard wraps over the whole lip.

If you are not sure how your guards are held down, check before you buy a box of clips. How to clean gutter guards shows how each common type is fastened, and the same details decide which clip will fit.
How do you hang lights safely?
Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority publishes a holiday safety list every year. These are the parts that matter on a roofline:
- 1Buy lights rated for outdoor use with a recognized certification mark. In Ontario, electrical products must be approved by an accredited agency, such as CSA, ULC, UL, Intertek or QPS, before they are sold or used.
- 2Check last year's strings for cracked sockets, bare wire and loose plugs, and replace anything damaged.
- 3Connect no more than three light strings together, unless the package allows more.
- 4Plug outdoor lights into a GFCI outlet with a weatherproof cover that closes with the cord plugged in.
- 5Keep connections off the ground and away from puddles, driveways and walkways.
- 6Look up before you climb: keep yourself and the ladder at least 3 m from overhead powerlines.
- 7Turn the lights off when you go to bed or go out, or put them on a timer.
The first step is the one most people skip. In ESA's 2023 survey, 64 per cent of Ontarians had not checked for a certification mark the last time they bought electrical decor. The ladder rules are the same as for a gutter cleaning: firm, level ground, a standoff so the ladder never rests on the eavestrough, and three points of contact. Our step-by-step DIY guide covers the setup in detail.
What about permanent track lights?
Permanent lights, installed once in a channel along the roofline and run from an app all year, are showing up on more GTA homes. They are not a gutter product, but they share the same edge of the house. A few rules keep the two getting along: mount the channel under the eave or on the fascia board, not through the eavestrough; never drill into the trough itself; and leave the gutter and any guards reachable, because they still need cleaning twice a year.
Local bylaws care about this kind of lighting too. Brampton's property standards bylaw, for one, says exterior string lighting must be securely anchored and maintained in good repair, with cables and wires secured neatly to the building. A sagging, half-detached string is more than an eyesore. If you have permanent lights, mention them when you book a gutter cleaning so the crew can set ladders clear of the channel.
When should the lights come down?
ESA's advice is to take decorations down when the holidays are over, because they are not designed for year-round use and break down in the weather. For the gutters there is a second reason. Clips left on the lip catch spring maple keys and seed pods, and they get in the way of hand-clearing. Take the clips down with the lights on a mild, dry day, and look along the trough while you are up there: pulled hangers and ice damage are easiest to spot right after winter. The spring gutter checklist has the rest of the list.
What does this look like in Woodbridge?
Woodbridge homes give lights a lot of roofline to work with. Large brick and stone two-storeys with several gables, valleys and dormers, and long runs across wide fronts and double garages, mean long light runs too. Valley corners, often right above an entrance or the garage, are where debris piles up and overflow starts. Plan the light line so cords and clips stay clear of those corners.
Timing matters here as well. Street trees in East Woodbridge, West Woodbridge and Weston Downs are mostly bare by early November, but lots that back onto the Humber valley collect oak, maple and willow debris into late November and after every windstorm. On those streets, hang the lights after the last fall cleaning, not before.
Gutter guard installation in Woodbridge is priced on site, and cleaning a home that already has guards adds $40. A late-fall gutter cleaning in Woodbridge runs $399 for most two-storey detached homes and $549 for the largest estate homes, before HST in 2026, with every downspout flushed and before and after photos. Our crews do not hang lights or do electrical work, but a clean trough is the best thing to clip them to.

Frequently asked questions
Can you put Christmas lights on gutters with gutter guards?
Yes. Use clips that wrap around the gutter's front edge, or soffit clips under the eave, so the guard stays flat and fastened. Never lift or bend the mesh to slide a clip underneath it.
Do Christmas light clips damage gutters?
Plastic clips hooked over the eavestrough lip do not damage it and come off cleanly. Nails, staples and screws do: they can damage the cords and leave holes in the trough or fascia that leak.
Will magnetic light clips work on my eavestroughs?
Usually not. Most GTA eavestroughs are aluminum, which is not magnetic, so magnetic clips slide off. They only hold on steel gutters or other steel trim.
Should I take my lights down before a spring gutter cleaning?
Yes. Clips left on the lip catch spring seeds and get in the way of hand-clearing. Take down the lights and the clips together after the holidays, on a mild, dry day.
