Clean your eavestroughs twice a year in Toronto: once in late spring after the maple keys and blossoms drop, and once in late fall, late October to mid-November, after most leaves are down. Cleaning earlier wastes the visit, because the leaves you missed fall the following week.
How often should you clean gutters in the GTA?
Twice a year for most homes. Clean once in late spring after the maple seeds and blossoms drop, and once in late fall after the leaves are down. Homes under heavy old maples or backing onto a ravine often want a third mid-fall touch-up.
When is the best time for a fall cleaning in Toronto?
Late October into mid-November, once most of the leaves are on the ground rather than in the tree. Book early. Fall slots fill fast across the GTA and the last clear weekends before the freeze go first.
| Season | Best window | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Late spring | Late May to June | Clears maple seeds, blossoms, and winter grit |
| Late fall | Late October to mid-November | Clears the main leaf drop before the freeze |
| Mid-fall touch-up | Early October | Only for heavily treed or ravine lots |
How do you know your gutters need cleaning?
- Water sheets over the front edge during rain instead of moving to the downspout
- You can see plants or seedlings growing out of the eavestrough
- Downspouts gurgle, overflow, or stay silent in a downpour
- Staining on the fascia or streaks down the siding below the gutter
Should you do it yourself or book a crew?
A single-storey bungalow on a dry day is a reasonable DIY job if you are comfortable on a ladder. Two and three-storey homes, steep roofs, and wet leaves are where people get hurt. If you would rather not climb, we run the gutters and send you photos so you can see the work without leaving the ground.
The gutter clean is one job on a longer fall list: the GTA fall exterior checklist puts it in order with outdoor taps, downspouts and grading, and gutter cleaning in Toronto shows exactly what a visit includes.
The simplest fix for timing is to stop tracking it yourself. The Crew Plan puts you on the calendar twice a year, with priority fall scheduling and a photo report each visit.
Frequently asked questions
Is it too late to clean gutters in December in Toronto?
Not if they are not frozen. A clean in early December still lets the first thaws drain. Once the troughs are full of ice it has to wait for a mild spell, and a gutter that froze full of leaves is where ice dams start.
Should I clean my gutters before or after the leaves fall?
After most of them are down. Cleaning while the trees are still full means the troughs refill within days. On heavily treed lots, a light early-October pass keeps them from packing solid before the final late-fall clean.
How often do gutters need cleaning if I have gutter guards?
Less often, but not never: plan on a yearly check and clear, because fine grit, seeds and needles still collect under and on top of every guard type. What guards really do has the details.
