Moss on your roof and gutters: GTA causes and safe removal

4 min read

Green moss cushions along the shingle edges of a shaded roof above a gutter under tall trees

Moss grows on GTA roofs that stay shaded and damp: north-facing slopes, roofs under mature trees, and anywhere debris holds moisture. It lifts shingle edges, holds water against the roof and sheds clumps that clog eavestroughs. Remove it gently with a soft brush or a roof-safe treatment, never a pressure washer, then fix the shade and debris.

Why does moss grow on some GTA roofs and not others?

Moss wants three things: shade, lasting moisture and a foothold. A north-facing slope gets little direct sun, so dew and rain linger for hours longer. A roof under mature trees adds shade and a steady supply of leaves, needles and seed husks that collect in the shingle joints and hold water. Once a thin layer of organic debris is sitting on the roof, moss spores have somewhere to take hold.

That is why two houses on the same street can look completely different: one with an open south slope stays clean, while its neighbour under a big oak grows a green carpet on the side that never sees the sun.

Is moss actually harmful?

  • It holds water against the shingles like a sponge, so the roof stays wet long after rain.
  • As it grows, it pushes under shingle edges and lifts them, opening paths for water and wind.
  • Clumps break off and wash into the gutters, where they block outlets and hold still more water.
  • In winter, wet moss freezes, adding to the ice that builds at the eaves.

Is it moss or algae?

Dark streaks running down the shingles, especially on the north side, are usually roof algae. They are mostly cosmetic, though they make a roof look older. Green, raised, spongy cushions are moss, and that is the one that holds water and lifts shingles. Lichen, the flat, crusty grey-green patches, grips shingles tightly and is best left to a roofer's advice rather than scraped off.

How do you remove moss safely?

  1. 1Stay off the roof. Work from a properly set ladder at the eave with a standoff, and treat anything you cannot reach safely as a job for a pro.
  2. 2Brush gently, always downslope, with a soft brush on a pole. Brushing upslope lifts shingle edges and tears them.
  3. 3For stubborn growth, use a moss treatment labelled for asphalt roofs, applied exactly as directed, with plants below wetted and protected.
  4. 4Let treated moss die and loosen over the following weeks; rain washes much of it off.
  5. 5Clean the gutters afterward. The loosened moss ends up in them, and it blocks outlets fast.

How do you prevent moss coming back?

  • Let the light in: trimming branches that shade the roof is the most effective long-term fix.
  • Keep debris off the roof so moss has nothing to root in. Why roof debris matters.
  • Keep the gutters clean, so water drains off the roof edge instead of backing up into it.
  • Consider zinc or copper strips near the ridge; rain washing over them carries metal ions that slow growth on the shingles below.

Why is it common in Richmond Hill?

Richmond Hill climbs the Oak Ridges Moraine, and around Oak Ridges and Jefferson homes sit in moraine forest, heavy with oak and pine. Tall trees on the lot keep north slopes in shade most of the day, and pine needles are especially good at holding moisture. They mat into a felt layer in the gutters and on the roof. Pine needles and gutters covers that side of it.

We don't apply moss chemicals or pressure wash shingles. What roof debris removal in Richmond Hill does is clear loose leaves, needles and grit off the roof surface and out of the valleys, so moss has less to root in. It is a $59 add-on to a cleaning, which runs $299 to $499 before HST for most homes, with before and after photos.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove moss from my roof?

Yes, gently. Moss holds water against the shingles, lifts their edges and clogs gutters when it breaks off. Remove it with a soft brush working downslope or a roof-safe treatment, and address the shade and debris that let it grow.

Can I pressure wash moss off my roof?

No. Pressure washing strips the protective granules from asphalt shingles, can force water under them and can void manufacturer warranties.

Do zinc strips stop moss?

They can slow regrowth. Rain washing over a zinc or copper strip near the ridge carries metal ions down the shingles below it. The effect is strongest close to the strip and does not replace clearing shade and debris.

Are black streaks on my shingles moss?

Usually not. Dark streaks down a roof are typically algae, which is mostly cosmetic. Moss forms raised green cushions and is the one that holds water and lifts shingle edges.
