Fascia, soffit, eavestrough: know your roofline

Your roof edge is three parts working as a system: the fascia is the vertical board along the edge, the soffit is the vented panel underneath it, and the eavestrough is the water channel fastened to the fascia. When one fails, it usually takes a neighbour with it.

Fascia: the board everything hangs on

The fascia runs along the roof edge, capping the rafter ends. Its structural job on your roofline is being the anchor: every gutter hanger fastens into it. Sound fascia holds a gutter for decades; wet fascia crumbles around the fasteners, and the gutter starts pulling away no matter how many times it is refastened. The tell is peeling paint, dark staining, or wood that gives under a thumb press.

Soffit: the part that breathes

Look under the roof overhang and you see soffit — usually vented aluminum or vinyl panels. Those vents feed your attic ventilation: air enters at the soffit, exits at the roof or ridge vents, and keeps the attic cool and dry. Blocked or damaged soffits mean a hotter, damper attic — which accelerates shingle ageing and, in winter, feeds the melt-refreeze cycle behind ice dams. Peeling soffit paint or sagging panels usually point to water getting in from above.

How the system fails as a chain

  • A clogged eavestrough overflows at the back edge, soaking the fascia behind it
  • Wet fascia rots around the gutter fasteners; the gutter sags and pulls away
  • The gap lets overflow run behind the system, staining and entering the soffit
  • A compromised soffit lets moisture into the attic edge — insulation, mould, ice dam fuel
  • Total path from 'cleaning skipped' to 'carpentry quote': two or three seasons

Which repairs belong to whom?

Gutter refastening, seam resealing, and re-levelling are eavestrough work — we handle those from $89, priced on site. Small fascia repairs behind a gutter often happen in the same visit. Full fascia or soffit replacement is carpentry, and on the character homes around Aurora's Town Park it deserves someone who respects old wood — if that is what your roofline needs, we will say so plainly and point you to the right trade rather than improvise.

The usual cause of wet fascia has its own guide, water running behind gutters, as does its usual result, sagging gutters; older Toronto houses may have built-in box gutters instead. Gutter repair in Aurora covers the eavestrough side.

Next time you are in the driveway, look up and name the three parts. If the fascia is staining below a gutter run or the soffit is peeling, the eavestrough above it is where the story started — and that part, at least, is a quick fix.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between fascia and soffit?

The fascia is the vertical board along the roof edge that the gutter fastens to. The soffit is the horizontal panel underneath the overhang, usually vented to let air into the attic.

Can gutters be reattached to rotten fascia?

Not for long. Fasteners cannot hold in soft wood, so the gutter pulls away again. The damaged fascia has to be repaired or replaced first, then the gutter re-hung.

Why are my soffits stained or sagging?

Usually because water is getting in from above: a gutter overflowing backward, a gap behind the gutter or a missing drip edge. Fix the water source before replacing the panels.
