How to choose a gutter cleaning company (and the red flags)

Choose a gutter company on five things: liability insurance and WSIB coverage, a written flat price, the downspout flush included, debris hauled away, and proof of work. Any company that hesitates on one of the five is telling you something.

The five questions to ask before booking

  • 1. Are you insured and WSIB covered? An uninsured fall at your home can become your problem
  • 2. What exactly is the price? Flat and written beats 'depends what we find up there'
  • 3. Is the downspout flush included? A cleaning without it is cosmetic
  • 4. What happens to the debris? Bagged and hauled — not raked into the garden or left at the curb
  • 5. How do I know the work was done? At height, proof means photos, not promises

Why is proof of work the sharpest filter?

Gutter cleaning is the classic unverifiable job: the work happens somewhere you cannot see without doing the dangerous part yourself. That asymmetry is exactly where corner-cutting lives — a crew can clear the visible front run, skip the rear, and collect. Before-and-after photos of every run collapse the asymmetry completely. It is why we built our whole operation around them: the photo is the receipt.

Red flags worth trusting

Red flagWhat to ask
Quote far below market, around half the going rateWhich steps are included: insurance, the downspout flush, the rear runs?
Cash only, no paperworkCan I see a written quote and a certificate of insurance before work starts?
Payment up front, in fullCan I pay once the work is underway or done?
'We'll just blow them out quick'Will wet, packed debris be cleared by hand, and where will blown debris land?
Door-knocker 'we're doing your neighbour's'Can I have the quote in writing and a day to compare it?
No mention of downspouts at allWill every downspout be flushed and flow-tested?

What does a fair 2026 price look like?

In the GTA, a full cleaning — hand-cleared runs, every downspout flushed, debris hauled, proof provided — runs $299 to $499 for most homes, by home type and storeys. If a quote is meaningfully cheaper, ask which of those steps it includes; if it is meaningfully pricier, it should come with something extra you can name. Most of our prices sit in that band, with large and estate homes at $449 to $549 and a custom quote at three storeys, all published on the site, with $0 due at booking and payment only once the crew is halfway through the job.

Before you book, what happens during a professional cleaning shows what a complete job looks like, reading a photo report shows how to check it afterward, and gutter cleaning in Pickering publishes its price up front.

Whoever you book — us or anyone — ask the five questions. The good companies answer all five without blinking, and the other kind gets flustered at question one. That is the whole test.

Frequently asked questions

Should a gutter cleaning company be insured in Ontario?

Yes. Ask for liability insurance and WSIB coverage, and for a certificate of insurance if you manage property. A fall on your property by an uninsured worker can become your problem.

Is it normal to pay for gutter cleaning up front?

Full payment before any work is a red flag, because the company's incentive leaves with your money. Payment partway through, once the work is visibly underway, is more balanced.

What should a gutter cleaning quote include?

Hand-clearing of every run, front and back; a flush of every downspout; debris bagged and hauled away; a check for loose hangers and leaks; and proof of the work, ideally before and after photos.
